View of Elazar from Efrat

Welcome to Elazar

Elazar is a religious-Zionist community located on a low-lying hill just off the main road running through Gush Etzion. It is surrounded by the communities of Neve Daniel, Efrat and Alon Shvut. Elazar was established in 1975 as a cooperative moshav by a group of Olim from North America and England, and became a yishuv kehilati (village) in 1990. The Yishuv is named after the hero who fell on this site, in the Hasmonean revolt against the Greeks, fighting against their elite elephant corps.

Today, more than 300 families make their home in Elazar, living in private houses and apartments. The population is made-up of people from all age groups and diverse ethnic backgrounds. During recent years, the population of Elazar has been growing steadily, and 100 new families will be joining the yishuv in the near future.

Most of residents work outside Elazar, while a few are employed within the yishuv. There are four shuls, a mikveh, child-care facilities, kindergartens, a branch of Bnei-Akiva, a library, a clinic, a grocery, the "Simchat Shani" banquet hall, a therapeutic zoo "Chavayot", and the art gallery "Beit David".
